Exploiting the Colloidal Stability and Solubilization Ability of Clay Nanotubes/Ionic Surfactant Hybrid Nanomaterials

Halloysite clay nanotubes are functionalized by exploiting the different charges between the inner positive and the outer negative surfaces; accordingly, a selective adsorption is pursued by employing anionic and cationic surfactants. The obtained hybrid materials dispersed in aqueous phase are studied from the physicochemical viewpoint to investigate the colloidal stability that is a crucial parameter for applications. It is demonstrated that the adsorption of anionic surfactant into the HNTs lumen increases the net negative charge of the nanotubes enhancing the electrostatic repulsions and consequently the dispersion stability. Surface modification of luminescent lanthanide phosphate nanorods with cationic "Quat-primer" polymers.

"Quat-primer" polymers bearing cationic groups were investigated as a surface modifier for Tb-doped cerium phosphate green-emitting fluorescent nanorods (NRs). The NRs were synthesized by a microwave process without using any complex agents or ligands and were characterized with different analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Poly(ethyleneimine) partially quarternized with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride was synthesized separately and characterized in detail. Pyrene Containing Polymers for the Non-Covalent Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes

Pyrene containing diblock copolymers based on poly(methyl methacrylate) were synthesized and investigated regarding their adsorption on carbon nanotubes (CNT). The pyrene units were introduced using a reactive ester monomer for the build up of the second block which later on was reacted polymer-analogously with amine functionalized pyrene derivatives. As we started from the same reactive ester intermediate, full block length identity is given. We varied the length of the anchor block to find an optimal block length and used pyren-1-yl-methylamine as well as 4-pyren-1-yl-butylamine as anchor units.
